Yes. The Links set a recommended maximum handicap of 28 for men and 36 for ladies on the Championship Course, and inside that a high handicapper can have a great day here. I’ve watched hundreds do it. She’s hard, but she punishes the wrong decision, not bad luck. Play the green tees, take one more club, aim away from every bunker you can see, and keep the ball under the wind. Try to overpower her and she’ll take your ball, your temper and your afternoon.
Can a 20-handicapper enjoy Carnoustie?
Yes, and I’ve walked round with hundreds of them who loved it.
The ones who struggle aren’t the worst players. They’re the ones who arrive determined to take her on. A 20-handicapper who plays within himself will shoot near his handicap and talk about it for twenty years. A 12-handicapper who wants to prove something will lose four balls before the turn.
The plan for a high handicapper at Carnoustie
Play the green tees. Green are the front tees, 6,139 yards, par 70. White are the back at 6,945, yellow the middle at 6,589, and the blues are the Hogan’s tees, the pro tees, which are nothing to do with you or me. Playing the greens is not a lesser round. It’s the difference between enjoying her and surviving her.
Take one club more than your ego says. Every time.
Aim away from every bunker you can see, and then give it more room than that, because there is usually another one hidden behind it. There are 112 of them. The 2nd on its own has ten, and whatever tees you play off there are bunkers in your range.
Keep it low into the wind. Land it short and let it run. The ground is the game here, and that’s the biggest single adjustment for an American visitor coming off soft parkland courses.
On 17 and 18, decide on the tee whether you’re laying up short of the burn or carrying it, and commit. The sevens come from men who wanted a four.
And take a caddie the first time. That’s the honest answer to whether you need one.
Is Carnoustie hard, or unfair?
Hard. Not unfair. There’s a difference and it matters if you’re a high handicapper.
An unfair course punishes good shots at random. Carnoustie punishes the wrong shot every time and the right shot never. The bunkers are where a greedy line goes. The burns are where an over-clubbed approach goes. Hit the shot the hole asks for and she leaves you alone. That’s why a sensible 24-handicapper often has a better day here than a wild 10.
What handicap do you actually need?

Trying to play her like a parkland course. Flying it at flags. Taking driver because it’s “only” 6,945 yards off the whites.
She’s a links. Land it short, let it run, and stop arguing with the wind.
