The rule as written is 28 for men and 36 for ladies on the Championship Course, and the Links word it as a recommended maximum. What actually happens is different. I have never seen a visitor asked for a handicap certificate. So the honest answer is that the limit is not the thing standing between you and a good day here. The tee you play is. She is the best part of 7,000 yards of fairway bunkers and the Barry Burn off the whites, and a 30-handicapper who takes them on will not enjoy a five-hour round of it.
The published handicap limits are Carnoustie Golf Links’ own, from their green fees page. Correct at 14 September 2026. What follows is what I see on the tee.
What is the handicap limit at Carnoustie?
28 for men. 36 for ladies. Championship Course. The Links word it as a recommended maximum rather than a locked door.
Now the part the tour operators will not tell you, because they publish the rulebook and I work the tee. In all my years on the bag here I have never seen a visitor asked to produce a handicap certificate. Take proof with you if you have it, because it costs you nothing to have it in your pocket. Do not cancel a trip over it.
What that means in practice is that nobody is going to stop you. Which puts the decision back on you, and the decision that matters is not the number on your card. It is which tee you play.
Why does Carnoustie have a handicap limit?
Because she is honest about what she is.
From the white tees the Championship Course is 6,945 yards, par 72. There are 112 bunkers, you can see most of them, and the one you can see often has another hiding behind it. The Barry Burn crosses the last two holes like it is paid to. On a windy day a 28-handicapper is looking at a five and a half hour round and a lost dozen.
The limit is not there to keep people out. It is there so the people who play her get a round of golf and not a day of punishment.
Which tee should I actually play?
This is the question nobody asks and everybody should. Off the card, back to front:
Blue, the Hogan’s tees. These are the pro tees, and they are not for you.
White, the back tees, 6,945 yards, par 72.
Yellow, the middle tees, 6,589 yards, par 70.
Green, the front tees, 6,139 yards, par 70.
Now look at the yellows properly, because this is the trap. They are 350 yards shorter than the whites and they are the harder tee. You lose two par 5s off the yellows, so the card drops to 70, and by Course Rating the yellows rate harder than the whites. Two holes you were expecting to reach in two are now holes you have to hit a good long approach into. Plenty of good golfers walk off the yellows wondering what hit them.
My advice, and it is only mine: play the greens unless you are genuinely good enough for the whites. I have never once caddied for someone who walked off the green tees saying it was too easy.
Is there a handicap limit on the Burnside or the Buddon?
The Links publish the limit for visiting golfers rather than breaking it out course by course, and in practice the Burnside and the Buddon are where you start if you are over it. The Burnside, at par 68 and 5,943 yards off the whites, is a proper test in its own right. Hogan qualified on it.
What if I’m just over 28?
Play the Burnside this trip. Get your handicap down. Come back for her.
