This is the course guide. Hole by hole, tee to green, how Carnoustie actually plays when you are standing on it. If you are after the funny one, that is The Dark Scottish Caddie.

Every hole. Every named bunker. Every wind read you will not find in a yardage book. Part course guide, part history, part love letter to the hardest links in the world.

This is the same book that hit No.6 in Amazon’s Practical Golf Guides chart, but ordered here it comes signed, and inscribed to whoever you want it made out to. Put the name in the Who should I sign it to? box above, or in the Order notes at checkout, and I will write it in before it goes in the envelope.

Every direct order goes out with a Carnoustie Caddie sticker, and it is posted from Carnoustie itself, not from a warehouse.

I read David’s book, “The Carnoustie Caddie” after I had played Carnoustie in October 2025. I wish I had read the book before I played. I came back to Carnoustie in September 2026 and I had David on the bag. My goal was to break 100. Despite the rain and wind, I accomplished my goal with David’s assistance. We had so much fun and David caddied for me the next day at Panmure. My two days with David were bucket list and I am hoping to come back in May 2027!

I’ve had the pleasure of playing Carnoustie 4 or more times since the 80’s, I’ve also enjoyed looping for 2 best mates, both golf pros, over many years. There are few workplaces where razor wit and sarcasm come together to make the day a pure joy, i wish i had his book on great oneliners back then!
Dave’s books capture the nature of the course, I can visualise each hole as he describes it years after playing and life as the ever suffering but optimistic caddie! The Dark Scottish Caddie nails it, had me in stitches, the art of knowing when to put down these gold nugges and insights and he just nails it!
I was picking up everything Dave was putting down lol
I’d recommend both books to any golfer ……you might even be able to prepare an equally witty comeback if Dave delivers an assessment on your game!!

If you want to learn about Carnoustie beyond the 18 holes, buy this book. The way Dave takes you inside the ghosts of a world famous links course is perfectly mixed with how he’d ask you to play each hole if he were your caddie. It’s the perfect way to get excited about a round there. I should know. Dave carried my bag at ‘Carnasty’ in Sept ’26 and it was very cool having a man with his knowledge and story-telling ability as my teammate for a day.

If any other book takes you ‘inside the ropes’ at a course as well as this; I am yet to find it.

If you want a caddie at Carnoustie (and you would be mad not to have one!); Dave is your man. I wish I could add photos of my round to share the magic with you all.

    Carnoustie! It’s hard!
Imagine playing in 45km/h winds without David on your bag.
Now imagine doing it without having read the book beforehand.

At least when the bad shots come, you can think of how each hole should be played and the famous faces that have walked the course before you.

Easy reading, great book and a magnificent golf course as its subject.

The Carnoustie Caddie is a great little book. I read it cover to cover on the day I got it and it could have been Dave speaking the words on the page to me, talking me through playing the holes.
The book also includes descriptions of the named bunkers on the course as well Hole Names.
There is also a glossary of terms for the uninitiated.

I have not played the course recently but did play it in the seventies when all you had to do was the line you wanted, throw a bit of grass up in the air to check the wind speed and trust your swing.

The Carnoustie Caddie takes all the guess work out of that and is a must read if you want to get the most out of your Carnoustie experience.
And…it goes without saying if you need an expert caddy then Dave is your man.

I would heartily recommend you purchase The Carnoustie Caddie and also its companion book The Dark Scottish Caddie…both excellent books.
    Happy golfing.
